Jacqueline Sanchez, Salon Gregories, Newport Beach, California

Bright, bold colors integrated into and highlighting haircuts is the big new thing in hair fashion photography.  Are clients requesting this hair color in salons?  (They are here in Australia!)

In Newport Beach, our clients are conservative. However, they very much appreciate edgy, bold, well -executed haircolor as an art.

Bright colors seem to need replenishing often.  Does this bring clients back to the salon more often? Clients who wear bright colors understand that their color is a higher maintenance choice. They are always excited to replenish to achieve the drama a bright color is intended to have.

How do your clients maintain their hair color at home?

In addition to personalizing their color formula to stay ahead of unwanted tones, I prescribe my clients with professional products designed to maximize their color between visits.

Hair color is a lot of fun currently.  What do you think has brought this about?  Bright colors are certainly not conservative and in the past were not considered commercial.  What has changed to bring this about?

Throughout history, celebrities have always set the tone (pun definitely intended) for our styles. Recent icons like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Kelly Osbourne have given us permission to mainstream otherwise “punky” colors.

What is the range of your clients’ ages who are asking for bright colors?  Is it only teenagers or others as well?  Why do they tell you that they want bright colors?

Clients of all ages are experimenting with bright colors. Feeling lost in a sea of blondes, what better way to set themselves apart.

Where is hair color heading in the next year or two?

We exist in a very tolerant era, almost anything goes! However, a “less is more” approach to hair color will trend for the foreseeable future.

Bright, bold colors integrated into and highlighting haircuts is the big new thing in hair fashion photography.  Are clients requesting this hair color in salons?  (They are here in Australia!)

Yes, they are. Cotton Candy Colors are a huge trend this summer season, and there many ways to make it wearable

Bright colors seem to need replenishing often.  Does this bring clients back to the salon more often? All depending on the client, but it seems clients like the effect of the when the color fades into a more pastel version; it gives them a secondary look.

How do your clients maintain their hair color at home?

Home maintenance is very important to maintain the longevity of the color, so most of my clients use a color shampoo and conditioner as well as styling product that have UVA and UVB protection and heat protection.

Hair color is a lot of fun currently.  What do you think has brought this about?  Bright colors are certainly not conservative and in the past were not considered commercial.  What has changed to bring this about?

I think we are in a state of excitement and creativity. People want to experiment more, not only with their fashion, but with their hair.

What is the range of your clients’ ages who are asking for bright colors?  Is it only teenagers or others as well?  Why do they tell you that they want bright colors?

I’m finding that all ages want to experiment with some color. It’s all about placement for it to be wearable for all ages.

Where is hair color heading in the next year or two?

You will see a continuation to fascinating colors and definitely more saturated colors are where it’s heading in the next year.

Bright, bold colors integrated into and highlighting haircuts is the big new thing in hair fashion photography.  Are clients requesting this hair color in salons?  (They are here in Australia!)

On occasion, maybe one client a week. Not enough for me!!

Bright colors seem to need replenishing often.  Does this bring clients back to the salon more often? Usually yes.  The ones that like the bright colors tend to like to switch them up often also, so it’s not always a replenishing, but more of a color change.

How do your clients maintain their hair color at home?

Most of them use the recommended color safe shampoos and conditioners that I recommend from the salon.  My personal favorite is the Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo and the Joico K-Pak Revitaluxe, because it protects and repairs the hair, while adding more shine the more often you use it consecutively!

Hair color is a lot of fun currently.  What do you think has brought this about?  Bright colors are certainly not conservative and in the past were not considered commercial.  What has changed to bring this about?

I feel the change is because people are looking at hair color more now as an accessory, versus something that describes WHO they are. I think when these great shades are incorporated properly in to an existing hair color or an accent piece in a haircut, they become melted in, and perform their job well: to create interest!

What is the range of your clients’ ages who are asking for bright colors?  Is it only teenagers or others as well?  Why do they tell you that they want bright colors?

I find it goes the gamut. It’s mostly high school and college age people that want the bright color in large amounts.  I do find that people in their 30s and 40s are open to the bright colors as well, but don’t want the commitment, so then I approach them with extensions of them, so they don’t have to have the damage of prelightening, and it’s a quick add on service while giving them the flash of color they are looking for!  They usually say they want it because they want to be different from everyone else, and they are bored with their hair color they have had forever!

Where is hair color heading in the next year or two?

I feel hair color is going to be trending over the next year with more balayage and ombré techniques and color blending.  I feel we will also start to see more “crayola” colors used in our foiling techniques, but used in subtle fashions: weaves of bright yellow in a golden blonde, slices of orange and red oranges in  red heads, delicate pieces of violet and red violets in brunettes, and blues and greens and violets infused to dark brunettes, all to give hints of “something” in the hair color, but leaving the viewer to wonder what it was.

Bright, bold colors integrated into and highlighting haircuts is the big new thing in hair fashion photography.  Are clients requesting this hair color in salons?  (They are here in Australia!)

Yes, bright, bold color’s have been going on in the industry for a while but it is now being requested by clients.  It is not unusual now for clients to be wearing bright, bold colors in their hair.

Bright colors seem to need replenishing often.  Does this bring clients back to the salon more often? Yes, when you use bright colors like this you do need to pre-lighten the hair prior to achieving the bright colors, so when the client comes back, you only have to re-apply the bright shades and you don’t have to pre-lighten every time depending on how the color’s have been placed.  Generally, I place the color’s internally and not on the re-growth so that the client does not see a line of demarcation, that way the pre-lightening does not need to be done as often and every time.

How do your clients maintain their hair color at home?

Do not shampoo a color that has just been done for 24 to 48 hours, this is when you lose most of the color, shampoo with a product that has the correct pH 4.5 to 5.5 so that the color is not being stripped out of the hair and also use a conditioner with the same pH.

Hair color is a lot of fun currently.  What do you think has brought this about?  Bright colors are certainly not conservative and in the past were not considered commercial.  What has changed to bring this about?

I feel it’s the times, hair is an accessory it reflects the individual and clients want to express themselves, also you see allot of celebrities wearing brighter colors and clients like to follow their look’s.

What is the range of your clients’ ages who are asking for bright colors?  Is it only teenagers or others as well?  Why do they tell you that they want bright colors?

All age groups, not just for teenagers.  If you ask the client if they could have any color in their hair what would it be?  The answer is, purple, pink, green, blue, red, teal, magenta.  Personally, I feel that bright colors will not just be a trend a thing of the moment but are here to stay and why not? In the world of color we have these shades, why can’t they stay in the world of hair color and I feel they will.

Where is hair color heading in the next year or two?

Can’t say because that will be my next two years’ NAHA entries and the hair color I will be doing from platform and if I say, then I will not be individual, so sorry,  I can’t give my next trends away, yet but I am working on them and I am very excited.
