Shooting with Pro Models
Model Agent Philip Darley shares his tips on sShooting with Professional Models.
When shooting for your salon its always good to get it right the first time around. Whether its for Competition or for promotional material the key to a winning shoot is not only great hair but of equal importance the ‘talent’ that you are booking.
Putting aside a proper budget allowing you to book amazing models for your shoot is going to benefit you greatly. And ultimately give you what you want – fabulous shoots!
Everyday people and professionals like to aspire to something. Having a shoot that displays beauty at its all round best and having a direction gives clarity to your collection and gives you a definitive edge.
Booking the right models is essential to your shoots success. Be sure to mix your looks, make it colourful, use all races, you want to show versatility. Look out for personality too, as an agent I find this extremely important, there are so many pretty girls but you want more. You want the model to be able to bring your collection alive and not sit there like a dead fish.
Work your budget wisely….Generally with most agencies you can approach them asking if any of their talent need their hair done for free in exchange for a cheaper rate at time of shooting. Standard day rates for models 5 hrs onward vary from$700 to $1500 to $2500 depending on the experience of the talent and how in demand the model is. You can always find new faces that need images for their books and this generally is a good option as negotiations can be made to reduce your costs. To be fair on the models it is always good to have sufficient budget in which to pay them for their time.
Always make your usage of the images clear to the agent. This can be a real grey area. Ask the agent directly about usage and make sure you understand what they mean. Get it all in writing too to save misunderstandings.
Once models are booked try to keep to a tight schedule. Remember you’re paying good $$’s for their time.
Don’t do anything drastic and always let the agency know exactly what you want to do with the models hair. I have seen many unhappy models come out of shoots with hair that they cannot work with. If the look is going to be a dramatic change, permission should be attained from the agent before scissor hits head or colours are applied That way tears are spared all round.
Other than that all you can be is fabulous! Shoots are great fun and I find my models really enjoy working on collections. There’s always a creative buzz and if you work with a great team great results are assured.
