Letters from India – A Stylist Abroad Series

Filed under : Hairdressing Articles, News

rod anker in India Well June is over and everyone has headed for the Hills or to Europe to get some respite from the constant heat, each day above 40. The first thing anyone says is “ Its so Hot” there is something about manifesting our surroundings and the way we feel about them. I am loving the heat, very similar to rural Australia when I was a child so I feel very at home with it and besides everywhere I go is air-conditioned.

Since we last spoke, we have done a shoot for Mens Health and as you can see the pictures there was a lot of hair done but the end result it was decided the models look was to be in pool or shower. Needless to say it was good fun and very well organized. The Zoolander pose was the best shot i think!

Having another 3 local staff start with us about a month ago I have been very busy training them ( even though they have been through a course that makes the qualified…3 months!!!) we have started from the beginning and they are all doing very well. The one Assistant I have had from the beginning “ Akram” is developing himself and is becoming more western every day with constant humour which surprises me each time. “ Mr Rod, when are you sending me to Singapore to work” he asks intermittently, my reply is always the same. One day.

I headed back to Australia for 2 days to see my two girls, which was great but of course never enough time, had a chance to spend some time with them, family and catch up with close friends and give a hair cut to the mother of a client from the UK, get my scissors sharpened and buy some special treats ie Vegimite! All in all a very fast trip, was very weird to get off the plane and jump into a car and drive normally ( well without honking the horn and swerving in and out of traffic ).

I have just returned from a 4 day trip with a friend to a place called Ladakh (note spelling) is in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, often called little Tibet and with an average altitude of over 9,000 feet (3,000 m), it is India’s highest plateau. Also, India’s largest district with a primarily Buddhist population. Known for its lunar landscape, apricots, pashmina wool, two humped Bactrian camel and the gateway to Tibet and Central Asia which I am very excited about and will enjoy the peace and quiet. Had so many amazing experiences there one of which was being blessed by a 3 year old Rinpoche ( which is a Buddha monk reincarnated over many centuries- a truly amazing experience to meet and be blessed by a soul that is hundreds of years old and an experience you have to see to believe)

At present I am trying to gather interest from several major companies to commence hair Photographic competitions here (similar to L’oreal, American crew, Wella, Paul Mitchell or Goldwell ) with any luck or persistence, which I have if anyone knows me. We will get it doen and hopefully raise the profile of Stylists within this country as it is everywhere else in Asia and the world.

Anyway enough from me, talk soon
