Joey Scandizzo becomes two-time Australian Hairdresser of the Year at 2011 Australian Hair Fashion Awards, donates $25,000 to hairdressers in crisis.
Joey Scandizzo has been named two-time Australian Hairdresser of the Year at the 2011 Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFAs), held at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Sunday night. Creative Director of Rokk Ebony’s South Yarra salon in Melbourne, Joey became one of only three hairdressers in the country to receive the award more than once in its 18 year history.
With the help of friend and colleague Renya Xydis, Joey also raised $25,000 for the Hairdressers of Australia Crisis Support (HACS) charity, which he presented as he accepted his award. Founded in 2010 to help other hairdressers in need, the charity was set up by hairdresser Kate Gale, after a life threatening battle with breast cancer.
Speaking of the award and donation Joey said: “It’s awesome to have won twice now – especially as it’s judged by some of the top hairdressers over in the UK. Being able to use the recognition from last year’s win to raise money for Kate’s charity was really great too, it’s awesome to be able to give something back to the industry that’s been so supportive throughout my career.”
Joey’s collection, titled ‘Assembly’, wowed the AHFA international judging panel with its conceptual illustration of the essence of hair design – paring structure and texture back to the basics.
In his 16 year long career, this is his third AHFA after winning Australian Hairdresser of the Year in 2010 and Men’s Hairdresser of the Year in 2008. Joey is also a four-time Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year finalist, 2007-2010, and winner of the American Crew Face Off in 2008.
Featured in almost every women’s lifestyle title in Australia, his experience includes New York and London Fashion Weeks, Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, Channel 7’s Beauty and the Geek and US tv show, Shear Genius. He is also enlisted as the Design Team Director for Sebastian Professional’s Urban Design Team.
These awards precede the announcement of the 2011 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards finalists, where Joey will find out if he is a finalist for the fifth year running.
