Joey Scandizzo Biography

“You’re destined to be a nobody Mr. Scandizzo,” chirped one of Joey’s year 9 teachers – how wrong she was. A high-school dropout at the age of 15, Joey jumped head first into a hairdressing apprenticeship with Rokk Ebony that was soon interrupted with a severe case of dermatitis. The hands that would later trampoline the talent to stardom were in tatters and a shift to carpentry seemed the answer. In what could be considered a miracle, Joey’s Nonna stepped forward with an ancient remedy for the problem – dressed in gloves dosed with olive oil, Joey went to bed filled with hope. The next morning, he was ready to kick start a unique journey to hairdressing stardom.

Initiated into Rokk Ebony 12 years ago, Joey has influenced the evolution of both the company and Australian hairdressing. All consuming motivation and passion led to a photography course that allowed him complete control in the development of collections that were the first tell-tale signs of a talent eager to push the boundaries, whilst creating a luxury brand for hair.

Joey has since poured professionalism and creativity into a long line of photographic collections that have welcomed a string of prestigious accolades including finalist positions for Australian Hairdresser of the Year. His perfected glances into the future of hair have been published in multiple countries.

As editorial session stylist, Joey has delivered finesse and integrity to countless glossy publications, and has adopted the role as director for several fashion weeks. A fervent relationship with fashion is paramount to Joey. The style-setter views seasonal trends as a perfect vehicle into the public eye in his quest to raise hairdressings’ profile – developing trends for the runway allows Joey to commercialise and personalise the seasons’ key looks for clientele, ultimately raising respect and interest in his trade.

Joey understands education is fundamental to the future of hairdressing, and in all his endeavours, works to breed a young team of industry professionals along with him. Joey works to cultivate the standard of work filtering into the industry via presenting at multiple workshops both nationally and internationally. Through exposure on radio and TV, Joey is active in promoting hairdressing as a career path for young professionals – ultimately alleviating the skill shortage whilst attracting energetic, creative minded talent like himself to ensure a bright future for the face of Australian hairdressing.

Blessed with a business mind, Joey has built his own hairdressing empire in Rokk Ebony South Yarra. As part owner, Joey opened the salon in 2005 and has since bred an award-winning team and loyal brood of clientele that has fuelled record growth in the history of Rokk Ebony.

To take home both the AHFA and Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the year trophies is Joey’s ultimate goal, and to build on his list of director positions for fashion week’s both in Australia and abroad is a priority. Joey aspires to style a rich list of celebrity clientele frequently whilst making increasing appearance on television in aid of strengthening industry awareness.
