GREEN SALONS: A BEGINNING
Who Cares About The Environment?
I do, but who’s with me?
Hairdressing salons are not known for being Green. Our energy consumption is high, to say the least. When you think about air-conditioning in summer, heating in winter, hairdryers going all day, lighting, towel washing and drying, you get the picture. Most salons have huge hot water tanks and they are being heated 24/7. I know of salons that have more than four big 500 litre tanks. And we haven’t even talked about the water usage that goes with washing hair and towels all day long! We are environmental mini disaster zones. But there are ways to make changes that will save both the environment and your profit margin.
I know that being ‘eco’ is very current, but this is a trend that is important and worth jumping on. There are a few ways to Green your salon, and they are all very simple and inexpensive. Think how your clients would react when you told them you were saving the environment AND making them look spectacular.
WATER
Water is an essential part of hairdressing. This will never change, but wastage can be minimised. The easiest way is to get water saving taps installed and use appliances with a high WELS rating. WELS is the government water rating and is given to all taps and water-using appliances Some salon furniture places will offer this as well. Comfortel is one such company and I use their basins in my salon as the taps a 4 star rated.
Washing machines and toilets are also rated this way and you can save thousands of litres of water each year.
CHEMICALS
Chemical wastage is another issue relevant to our industry. Think about the amount of colour, shampoos and product that is washed down the drain in just one day in a hair salon. Using product that have fewer chemicals is a simple way to reduce the amount of toxins that go into our waterways and also onto your clients’ heads.
I use O&M haircare , a company who have used research and technology to eliminate any harsh and toxic chemicals from their colour and product ranges. Their mission is to challenge the artificial norms of professional haircare with the message that healthy hair begins when it’s free from stress. They are committed to researching clean formulations while adding the many positives that quality botanicals and essential oils have to offer. It’s not henna-style natural, but it’s less harsh chemicals and that is a good thing.
Kevin Murphy is the other product range I use, they contain high levels of natural ingredients and they use high grade essential oils and amino acids for the ultimate hair and scalp treatment. You’ll see the effects immediately. I know lots of companies are looking at ammonia-free technology or looking at becoming greener, such as Joico, Schwarzkopf and a few others. It’s an issue that will not go away, and the companies that choose to embrace a greener option are definitely the future of hairdressing.
One more thing-Save the Dolphins bucket. Have a bucket in the salon, scrape any unused colour product into it, then throw it in the bin. It stops it going down the drain. Small measures, but small steps are what help make the big one easier.
ENERGY
As I mentioned earlier, hair salons use a lot of energy. The bills tell you that, if nothing else! A great energy-saving device I use in my salon is an instantaneous gas hot water system.Instead of using energy to continuously heat thousands of litres of water, the gas system heats the water as it comes through the pipe as you need it. And natural gas is a renewable resource. Saving you money and helping to save our planet.
Other energy-saving tips that apply to homes also apply to salons. Things like using high-star rated appliances . Install flourescent lighting. Recycle. Only use the air-con when you need to. It’s all pretty simple.
CARBON FOOTPRINT
If you think you have done everything you can, there is still more. To offset all the energy you use, there are companies out there that will come in and audit you, and then you can purchase carbon credits. The Carbon Offset Watch will tell you which companies are the best. There are wind farms in India, solar energy in Australia, it’s completely up to you. Another option is to donate to Friends of the Earth, and they would put it into schemes that are helping our environment . I personally use Climate Friendly and offset all our carbon emissions.
It might seem like alot, but if you do a few of these things you will be making progress and together we can make a better future for our kids and the next generation of hairdressers.

Great article Stevie! Looking forward to learning more about getting our salons into an environmentally healthier set up.
This was a great article to read. I look forward to learning more about the organic and more eco-friendly products that will leave clients looking the same and feeling better about their service knowing they helped leave a smaller carbon footprint themselves!
Love your work Steve, great article
L’Oreal Professionnel also have a new range out which is eco friendly…Serie Nature…smells so good!!
Stevie, you have motivated me to make a start on addressing the simple things that can make a huge difference!
Great read
Awesome article…hopefully this brings awareness to other salon owners and what they can really do for the environment. I am very interested in your colour and product range O&M and would love to read more about them as i’ve heard a little but not enough

Can we have some more info on O&M? I did meet the owners at the AHFA Awards but that was a few red wines into the night so forgive me for not remembering their names etc.
Stevie, can you let them know we’d like to hear from them?
We had to get a new washing machine today! For just a fraction more $ we got a very water savvy top loader that uses less water than most! Its a start, did you know the average washing machine uses 15 liters of water per 1 kg of washing! Thats heaps of water.
Thinking smart, thanks stevie
Hi Stevie!
I really enjoyed your article! Does your salon know anything about an organization called Matter of Trust? If not you should definitely check them out. They use hair donated from salons to create mats that function to soak up oil spills!
Wow, oil spill mop ups, that is great, can it be colour or chemically treated hair or just natural hair?
I will search this organization!
Thanks for the tip

This is sensational!
Thank-you Samantha
hey guys
I’m pretty sure we will have a few interviews going up talking about more natural products, from O&M to ecohair. Even if you don’t use more gentle products its great to put some of the small measures in place to help environment and clients do love to hear how you are doing your little bit! I love to hear when someone has just bought the best and new eco-friendly washing machine, every little bit helps.
I have heard of the matter of trust but im a little embarrassed to say i have not signed up. (note to self todays job)
thanks for all the reply’s keep them coming
will be writing again soon
Great story, Stevie.
Not too sure how many salon are aware that at Hair Expo I launched the Big Towel Company; Our company can now offering 100% biodegradable, highly absorbent, disposable hairdressing towels.
We have been testing them for about five months in our salons and the staff and client love them. Not having to wash towels mean no excess water usage, lower electricity bills and fewer chemicals down the drain not to mention wage saving. Our salons are saving around 42% on laundry costs now.
They are made from wood fibers that come from certified renewable forrests and the beauty of the towels is they break down with in the environment in less than 6 weeks.
check out the web site for more info.
I can see that things are changing here in Australia, which is great to see. I was at the launch of Sublime Hairdressing last night – when Paula Kelly and Paul Foote announced their new green carbon offset policy, where clients can offset the cost of their cut and colour for 5 or 10 cents extra. Great choice for clients I thought and a very innovative step forward for the industry.
Good story Stevie, keep up the great work.
Thanks Gavin and thank you Sharon
The fact that the client can make their trip to the salon climate neutral. Qantas do it, why not your hairdresser? Gives the power back to the client to make a real difference. I love this idea.
As to water saving biodegradable towels wow, our industry is really making new and exciting steps to combat climate change.
If there is anything anyone would like to know regarding how you can make a difference in the salon, or whats the best, quickest way of making a difference drop me a line here at Prohairstylist
thanks
Stevie
Promoting the green agenda is great, well done Steve. Interestingly, Sublime use Easydry, makers of the original eco-friendly towel. Its md invented them five years ago. They are huge in Europe, where they are from and since June have been available in Australia. As well as being eco-friendly, they are also brilliantly absorbent, hygienic, convenient and save on storage. L’Oréal, Wella, Toni & Guy are big fans, as are award-winning salons like Andrew Collinge, Paterson SA and Hooker & Young.
Fantastic Article Stevie, Our salon recently started to use the Easydry Towels we purchased at Hair Expo and have no regrets with the use of this product. Throw out all the cotton towels I say !!
Thanks
