Social Media Guru – Google + Facebook = Change
My Hairdressers guide to Facebook lists,
I’m not sure how many of you hairdressers are on Google+ , I have admit I got caught up in the hype a couple of months back, Google+ is Google’s way of counteracting Facebook’s popularity. i didn’t want to miss out on another platform to share my thoughts, pictures etc…
But, in the end Google+ for me was slightly disappointing. It seems to do everything that i can on Facebook, except, most, of my friends were not there to share/watch/comment. And its this interaction or engagement that makes social networks so great – without anyone there, or people whom one considers one’s peers or at the very best, friends, you’re just shouting into an empty chamber.
Google+ is mostly public, so its a lot closer to how I see twitter working – in the way that anyone can follow or subscribe to your posts, it does have a great little function – circles. I can make a private circle where no-one can see the content I post to just that circle. What is interesting about Google+ and their circle feature is you can create circles of your friends, work mates, family etc, and I can just publish to any one of these circles or some or all of them. But I think this makes Google+ trying to be everything to everyone.
The reason I’m bringing this up, is that Facebook is the worlds leader in Social media, and google being the the heavyweight hitter on the internet was offering a serious challenger to their status. Facebook for perhaps for the first time is on the back foot. If you’re like me and have lots of people on your Facebook page who you don’t really know, we are in the same industry, we share a love for hair and our passion which is everything hair related, but you might not like them to see pictures of your kids, or you partying. You can now use the new Lists functions.
You can put people into lists – I could have lists such as:
▪ Mates
▪ Family
▪ Hairdressers I Love
▪ Hairdressers
The idea being you can go and look at your list of hairdressers and look at the stream. You never know what you will learn or see, and also you might not lose that favourite someones important post. I have lots of hairdressers in Australia and oversea’s who i admire and want too know what they are getting up to. Facebook has also brought in the new subscriber button.
Facebook has evolved over the years in the way it works, If you were worried what people can see (but then should you really be posting stuff that you worry about being seen?) , you probably will not like the new functions. If, like me, you only post things that you don’t care who see’s, (mind you i have done the odd drunk tweet or #fb post i have deleted)
Here are the main points Facebook wants you to know about the subscribe button:
▪ Choose what you see from people in the news feed
▪ Hear from people, even if you’re not friends
▪ Let people hear from you, even if you’re not friends
Facebook has changed, but so have we all over the years, more people are on these platforms. we want more, we want to see more. I like the changes, Facebook has evolved as our use of Facebook does, like any business, and Facebook is firstly a business, it needs to change. Just like our business needs to change as time moves on.
